Tier IV released the first-ever safety report regarding autonomous driving in Japan with the purpose of contributing to the development and implementation of autonomous driving technology. “Tier IV Safety Report 2020” provides an overview of Tier IV’s approach to autonomous driving and knowledge about safety gained through extensive experience of field operational tests.
Tier IV Safety Report 2020 (English PDF)
Since its founding in 2015, Tier IV has developed autonomous driving technology with the vision of achieving “Intelligent Vehicles for Everyone” − to establish the sustainable ecosystem for autonomous driving to which everyone can contribute in terms of development, and to solve societal issues such as traffic accidents and transportation inefficiency. Autonomous driving requires an integrated platform which combines software, cloud infrastructure and services, in addition to in-vehicle systems, and ensures a level of safety that satisfies society at a reasonable cost for implementation of the technology.
To develop all of these elements efficiently and dynamically, Tier IV has promoted the establishment of an ecosystem around Autoware*, the world’s first open-source software for autonomous driving. Autoware will establish transparent and safe autonomous driving technology by maximizing the contributions of the ecosystem and expanding a horizontally collaborative open source development approach to which various organizations and individuals can contribute in terms of development and wherein society can enjoy the benefits.
Moreover, as a leader of Autoware development, Tier IV has performed field operational tests on public roads in about 50 municipalities of 18 prefectures and has achieved best in class performance in Japan. Outside Japan, Tier IV has also accumulated experience with local partner companies.
This Safety Report provides an overview of Operational Design Domain (ODD) classification and the Reference Design for autonomous driving systems targeting specific ODDs. Based on the knowledge acquired through Autoware development and experience gained through extensive field operation tests under various conditions, Tier IV shares information with the purpose of establishing transparent and safe autonomous driving technology. This report also shares insights into common issues experienced through the work being done to make the field operation tests safe and easy to conduct, including verification methods of autonomous driving technology, safety measures of autonomous driving operations, and recommendations for regulation and authorization process.
We believe that making autonomous driving a reality has significant social value. Taking pride in being a deep tech company and giving first priority to safety, we will accelerate further development of AD technology, and continue to advance “Intelligent Vehicles for Everyone.”
About Tier IV
Tier IV, a deep-tech startup based in Japan, is dedicated to sharing technology for safe intelligent vehicles that will benefit all of society by enabling as many individuals and organizations as possible to overcome the barriers of time and space to collectively bring autonomous vehicles into reality.
Founded in December 2015, Tier IV has led the development of Autoware, the world’s first open-source software for autonomous driving, and applied Autoware in applications of last-mile driverless mobility and logistics. Tier IV and its global partners continue to evolve Autoware and provide turn-key solutions for commercialization of Autoware-based autonomous vehicles all over the world.
