- Tier IV’s autonomous driving software, ADLINK’s edge AI technology and ITRI’s academic research are coming together to develop autonomous driving solutions and systems based on Autoware*
- Autoware is the world’s first open-source software for autonomous driving used by hundreds of organizations including the United States Department of Transportation, Federal Highway Administration, major OEMs and startups around the world
- The alliance plans on working with local government to develop Proof of Concept (PoC) field tests on public roads, starting in Taiwan
Tier IV has partnered with ADLINK Technology Inc. (ADLINK), a global leader in edge computing, and the Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI), a world-leading applied technology R&D institution based in Taiwan, in a strategic partnership to collaborate on open-source software development of autonomous driving technology. Aiming to start off in Taiwan, the alliance will focus on jointly developing intelligent transportation and traffic management systems based on Autoware and will continue to invest in Autoware research, market expansion and ecosystem development.
Autoware is a complete open-source software stack for autonomous driving technology originally created by Prof. Shinpei Kato, founder of Tier IV. All rights to Autoware have been transferred to the Autoware Foundation (AWF) with a firm belief in building an open-source ecosystem in which anyone can participate and which benefits everyone. The alliance among Tier IV, ADLINK and ITRI aims to strengthen the synergy between corporate development and academic research, enabling greater accessibility to autonomous vehicles and services.
“We are very excited about the alliance amongst the three parties to expand the Autoware ecosystem and further the development of autonomous driving technologies. I hope that Autoware will become an open platform for everyone in Taiwan who is keen to learn about and develop intelligent vehicles” said Shinpei Kato, Founder and CTO of Tier IV, who also serves on the Board of Directors of the AWF.
“This is a huge milestone in ADLINK’s journey to develop cutting edge technologies for self-driving cars” said Eric Kao, General Manager of ADLINK’s Networking, Communication & Public Sector Business Unit (NCP). “By combining the leading domain expertise of Tier IV and ITRI with our extensive know-how in AIoT, edge computing and defense-grade reliability and ruggedness, this strategic partnership will allow us to jointly develop game-changing solutions for the autonomous vehicle market.”
“ITRI has been developing connected and autonomous driving technology and collaborating with industrial partners for local field trial applications, sponsored by the Ministry of Economic Affairs (MOEA) in Taiwan. It is a great opportunity to extend our business and technology partnership with Tier IV and ADLINK worldwide,” said Dr. Tzi-Cker Chiueh, ITRI’s Vice President and General Director of Information and Communications Research Laboratories.
With a focus on open-source technology, the new alliance will collaborate to combine autonomous driving software, edge AI and industrial research to conduct Proof of Concept (PoC) trials with local government and field tests on public roads. Starting in Taiwan, Tier IV, ADLINK and ITRI hope to expand Autoware adoption, research and development to make autonomous for all a reality. To join the AWF, please visit https://www.autoware.org.
